Let Me Tell You a Story – Effortless

let-me-tell-you-a-story.jpg

I work on the eighth floor of a skyscraper in the fourth largest city of America, looking out on highways, subburbs, industrial sites, apartment buildings, parking lots, and miles of four lane highway. Restaurants line the highway, and no matter when I am at the office, there is raucous activity below me.

Horrendous traffic and related traffic accidents, firetrucks, ambulances, police cars, 18 wheelers, passenger cars, dump trucks – you get the idea!

In my office, at times it is not that dissimilar, for I am usually slammed with questions, concerns, comments, client needs, supervisor demands, people management, and all around miscellaneous emergencies.

Except for today. There was a lull, a few minutes where everything was somewhat peaceful, at least in my mind and heart. During those few minutes, I took the time to look outside and enjoy the view of the clouds in the sky. No use looking down, for I know about the highway and infrastructure – it never changes. But the clouds have always fascinated me, and I took a moment to consume thier beauty.

It was a beautiful day with a few cumulus clouds – you know the puffy ones, nice and bright white, without holding the threat of a downpour. Very perty!

And then I noticed something in the air. A large bird, easily 400 ft above ground, sailing in the air. And for some reason, this bird, this hawk or eagle, held my attention. As it kept my attention, I considered the effort it must be putting out to maintain it’s position. Yet no flapping of the wings, no struggling, no work was evident in this birds flight. It simply rode the air currents, raising and lowing at will, without a single flap of it’s wings.

And I considered. As I mentioned, when at work, I tend to push, to be on the edge, seeking efficiencies, trying to squeeze out a profit from a well drained project. At times, it seems I forget to breathe, but we all know I am exagerating when I say that!

But today, that bird, that hawk, as it glided effortlessly in circles in the bright afternoon sky, I was reminded of the air currents under the believer.

We have a God who provides the “air currents” of the Spirit for us to “relax” on, to rely on, to find support in and to carry us in our journeys.

Isaiah 40:31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Yes I understand the verse speaks of mounting up, and I have always considered the verse to speak of the eagles efforts being included in the “mounting up”, but for some reason, the verse speaks differently to me today.

Yes, I will continue to expend energy at my office, at my home, in my hobbies and those side hustles. Yes – that will not change, for there is much to do, but precious little time to do it.

But as that eagle was supported by invisible air currents, I can take refuge in the truth that the Lord gives support, that He provides the “air currents” needed to complete the efforts during the day.

The secret will be that in the midst of each of my daily tasks, to have a somewhat “effortless” attitude, trusting in Him for each challenge.

That bird was awesome, and the picture in my mind will reside many many days. May I learn this truth!
