Stupid Idiots – Introduction

Stupid IdiotsMany times I have heard that Christians are idiots, dumber than a bag of hammers, fools, brain dead… You get my point, right?

Well I went to hear a brother speak a while back that advocated that Christians should be “stupid idiots”.  (His words, not mine!)

During the message, I expected one of two things to happen

  • I would understand his underlying premise and it would finally click, that is, that I would understand the bigger message.
  • The brother would at some point, use the message to rebuke us for our intellectual weakness.

I was wrong on both points, but I clung on to the first point until after the service.  I got home and began to discuss the message with my family, and we were all confused.  It seems we all got the message that Christians should be stupid idiots.

This man is a professional communicator leading one of the larger churches in the area.  The idea that he was misunderstood by my wife, my two daughters and myself was too much for me to swallow!  How could this be?

To give this brother the benefit of the doubt, and to find out what the intent of the message was, I set off on a wee bit of study into Acts 4:13, his text for the day.

After my preliminary study, I decided to contact this brother, share with him what I found in my study, discuss his message and ask for any clarification.  What follows in my next post is the beginning of the correspondence I sent this brother.

What think ye?  Before we go on to our next post, let me know what you think.

Should Christians seek the label of “stupid idiots”?

  1. Should we seek the label? Definitely not. Are we already tagged with the label? Yes, because the gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing. But should we be the label when another person genuinely seeks an understanding of the gospel? BIG NO! It’s why the Acts 4:13 ‘ordinary’ Peter says to give a logical defence[AMP] to anyone who asks for a reason for the hope we hold.

  2. Interesting idea. I think we Christians can appear idiotic when we blindly accept certain doctrines. We can also appear idiotic when we reject living the way most people do. I’ll gladly take being called idiotic for the latter reason, but not for the former one

  3. When people say things like that about us, they are simply uninformed. I’m a Christian but I am also an engineer. Christians are not idiots and definitely not uneducated. Look at many of the reformers during the dark ages. They were some of the most intelligent in their day. Look at Daniel and his companions. 10 times wiser than any in the kingdom. Solomon was the wisest man to ever live. There is an aspect to this that is important. We must never trust in our own wisdom and realize that there is always more knowledge to be gained. Our wisdom comes from God and is to be used to His glory. In 1 Corinthians, Paul talks about how the wisdom of men is as nothing. What God considers wise is not what worldly men and women think is wise. The opposite is true. I would much rather be considered and idiot in this world but wise in the sight of God. This is definitely a thought provoking subject.

        1. Hey, there is nothing lowly about a civil engineer! I work with computer hardware and software. We create multiplex computer systems for higher end motor homes and boats. The company I work for is also owned by a fellow Christian, and we all have prayer together before we begin work. We also have a Bible study every Monday morning before we begin. It’s been such a blessing!

I’m looking forward to see what you have to say on this subject.

          God bless
