Recently I have been in discussions with some friends that read my blog fairly consistently and they have, in an effort to understand my beliefs, have baited me by calling me a universalist.

That is fair, since I may not have defined every specific teaching as they may want, most likely due to the fact I honestly haven’t come to a settled persuasion on some of the teaching they may ask about me.

Initially, as I have stated in previous posts, I was surprised with the number of passages that support an evangelical universal reconciliation teaching. Please do not think that this teaching is the same as the “all roads lead to heaven” teaching, which I consider to be blasphemous. There is only one way to the Father, and that is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

With this, I would like to begin delving into some of the New Testament passages Mr. Giles brought to my attention, for your consideration, edification and civil discussion.

Regarding the book itself, I read it in one sitting, not simply because it was under 200 pages, but that it was challenging my though process and I found it enjoyable reading. If this topic interests you, please pick up a copy. It is well worth your time.

Our fifth blog post will begin with passage 5, Colossians 1:14, 19-20. Mr Giles provides a very good introduction to the passage and supplies points that I had never considered before. I do hope you will take a few minutes to consider this passage with me.

Passage 5

Colossians 1:14, 19-20

in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

As my readers may notice, this passage is the Colossian equivalent to the previous post Book Look – Jesus Undefeated – Passage 4 on this topic.

With this difference, Paul makes a slightly astounding comparison. But before we get to the comparison, consider the following two key verses in this book that defend the complete and utter unapologetic claim that Jesus is God Almighty.

Colossians 1:19 ESV – For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

Colossians 2:9 ESV – For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

Notice that both of these verses state that the fullness of God, all the fullness of God, not a portion of the fullness of God, not a certain percentage of the fullness of God, but all the fullness of God dwells in Him. He is the Messiah – God with us! The term “all” in these verses are the basis of this claim, in that Paul did not state –

For in Him deity dwells

Dang, we can say that about believers and we are simply beggars at the throne of God, granted tremendous privilege’s based on the righteousness of our Savior! He is the One in whom ALL the fullness of Deity dwells

OK Carl – as a believer, I understand and believe that Jesus is God. What is the point?

Let’s go back to the context of the original verses

Colossians 1:19-20

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Paul introduces the same phraseology as in Ephesians, but this time the “all things” is compared with the deity of the Lord Jesus.

This causes me to stop and consider how to understand Paul’s message. In Ephesians, the “all things” of verse 10 was related to the mystery of God’s will, set forth in Christ. The Ephesian passage speaks to uniting “all things” in Him. This passage speaks of reconciling all things to Himself.

Reconciling, dear reader!

The Greek term used in this passage is ἀποκαταλλάσσω apokatallássō, and is used to define three different actions by God toward sinners.

  • to reconcile completely,
  • to reconcile back again,
  • bring back a former state of harmony

You see, an argument in the Ephesian passage could be that the unity referred to is a forced unity, a uniting of all things based on the authority of the Messiah. Jesus is the Lord and has all authority and this may be Paul’s intent in Ephesians.

The argument of authority only doesn’t hold water for me in this passage, unless my readers can provide a cogent reason for reconsidering. Paul is speaking of reconciliation, that is a bringing back, a relationship being returned to between God and “all things”. Reconciliation is an action that screams of relationship, of two “people” looking at each other, relating to one another, at peace with one another!

Returning to consider the “all things” of verse 20, we read in Romans 8:22 that all of creation groans until the redemption of our bodies, yet when I read that passage I default to excluding most of humanity in the “all of creation” description.

Should the “all things” of Colossians 1:20 condition our thinking when we read a passage such as Romans 8:22?

Yet the “all things” of Colossians 1:20 must refer to a portion of humanity, since we know that some have not been reconciled. Therefore the “all things” must be understood to refer to “some things”. And if that is true, should we understand verse 19 to teach us that some of the fullness of the Godhead dwells in the Messiah?

If not, why not? Why would Paul change the intent of the term “all” from one verse to the next. It seems a difficult verse to argue against from the Universalist Reconciliation stance.

  1. Bottom line, I don’t believe the scriptures teach that man has a “free Will” I think it is the doctrine of demons and belief in that doctrine is evidence you have not come to the knowledge of the truth and do not know the true God.

The issue is what causes you to decide. I desired and decided after hearing the truth which required a new heart from God to believe and respond.

The regenerative heart comes because it is the same act from God as being drawn or given to Christ by the Father because belief is the work of God that causes you to come.

There is where we depart and have different gospels. You don’t need God to change your heart to choose.

You believe a gospel that man makes the difference between heaven and hell and I believe a Gospel that saves conditioned solely on Christ.

I think believing in a God that can’t save is idol worship, nonsense, unbiblical and presents a false gospel that doesn’t save.

You think the free will god is the biblical God. I guess you can say The serpent is the biblical false god of free will that can’t save.

He repeated basically your unbiblical view account of God’s interaction with Pharaoh and in addition, basically in his attempt to defend “free will” denied other biblical accounts when shown the biblical scripture and blatant facts that God controlled the heart and the thoughts in other biblical characters.

This was plainly shown to him and you in scripture. You blindly ignore the simple wording in the Bible plainly saying that God had control over the heart and thoughts; since the heart controls the thoughts.

You ignore multiple other accounts in the Bible that demonstrate God’s control over the heart.

You can’t understand because to use your repeated phrase “ it is your belief” that God created in us “free will” and any scripture that goes against your thoughts, you can’t absorb.

  2. Let’s conclude here

“I don’t believe in any form of free will- it’s a figment of man’s imagination; a lie from Satan”
I believe the scriptures teach that free Will is the delusional concept promoted and endorsed by the Serpent in the Garden of Eden and acquired by natural man, the descendants of Adam

“ Dying you shall not die” And God knows in the day you eat of it, you will be like God knowing good and evil.

You didn’t need God in order to choose to believe. You are special. I feel bad for the one that wasn’t created like you.

Unfortunately, you were special enough to believe the lie of free will. One who doesn’t need anything from God to choose.

God said No one comes to Me unless the Father draws Him John 6:44

You do know no one comes unless they believe so belief must be a gift; since it is the work of God. John 6:29

Let me repeat the portion of 1 John 2:19

“ they were not of us” They were generated from above therefore were never generated prior Your assumption has no substance

“Us being the ones given by the Father to Jesus

If you were given then in order to come you must believe and that has to be a sovereign gift of God John 3:8 since you don’t come unless you have received belief

Didn’t Jesus say knowing the true God and the whom He sent is everlasting life?

Knowing Him is everlasting life. He said the scriptures speak of Him. Scripture says if you believe into Him, you have eternal life.

Believing into Him is believing that salvation is conditioned on His work and His imputed righteousness alone without any contribution or effort from the sinner.

The atonement was effectual for His people chosen from before the foundation of the world; otherwise, if salvation was dependent on man, He could have died for no one, possibly. That would mean God couldn’t save all that He desired to save; since He desires to save all men. That is a depiction of a weak god who cannot and God condemns idol worship.

Why is Lazarus brought to Abraham rather than to God?

Didn’t the Jews consider God to be the judge of all mankind?

Why ask Abraham rather than God to have pity on him?

Was Abraham the Jewish equivalent of St Peter for Christians? (I am being waggish in this statement, for St Peter doesn’t have “pity pardons” for believers either!)

Does the rich man ignoring the existence of the beggar seal his fate?

This again is extremely bad news for most of us in America, and any other first world country.
Does being poor in this life entitle you to enter Heaven?

Where does the work of Christ enter into this? If being poor allows entrance to heaven, Christ died unnecessarily.

Why do we assume that Lazarus is buried when the story states the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abrahams side.

This last point shows how we insert our assumptions – that Lazarus was buried, therefore in hades. The rich man was in hades. Lazarus was “afar off”, with Abraham.”

Christ did not remove the sin of the unbeliever. Since, it is uncovered for eternity to an eternal righteous God, it is remembered and annihilation allows for no punishment for the sin to be covered. So, annihilation is not an equitable punishment because God is a just God and a savior and the unbeliever is condemned unjustified and unreconciled. In order for God to be a just God, there has to be punishment and annihilation is not equitable punishment .

You haven’t answered a lot particularly the issue brought up in your post on all things reconciled.

Why does it present in Colossians 1 that reconciliation of a person is determined by proof outwardly by continuing in the faith” That means unbelievers are not reconciled. Doesn’t it?

Then Mark 16:16 agrees you are condemned and consequently not reconciled if you are condemned. I can’t come to any other conclusion. Are condemned people reconciled?

So, not all things are reconciled but wait yes “all things” are reconciled if we are talking “classes ” of things isn’t there going to be a new heaven and a new earth and the old things are going to pass away. So, not everyone without exception has to be reconciled to fulfill the definition of “ all things” or “all creation” ( without exception) there are animals and plants etc that were subjected to the fall of Adam that are groaning for the day of redemption of Jew and Gentile when the new heaven and earth will be given. I just don’t think scripture is teaching what you are trying to accomplish to fulfill your desired belief system

The justice of a righteous God requires sufficient punishment for sin.

Since, Jesus, the sufficient sacrifice and payment wasn’t punished for their sin, they will be punished for their sin. Jesus qualified as the perfect sacrifice to satisfy God’s eternal justice through His shed blood.

Since, their sin will be eternally viewed by God for eternity; and it is uncovered by the eternally satisfying sacrifice, they have to satisfy God’s eternal justice through eternal punishment.

Annihilation or extinction doesn’t qualify for eternal payment or punishment for sin; so the ones not found in the book of life will suffer eternal punishment to satisfy God’s justice being a righteous God.

Those who do not have faith in the gospel are not shown to be reconciled from the foundation of the world which is in agreement with Mark 16:16 He who does not believe the gospel is condemned and no condemned person is reconciled.

          1. Mark 16:16 ….. if you die in unbelief you are condemned because he that does not believe is condemned. There is no opportunity to believe the Gospel of Christ after death. Therefore you are eternally condemned

      1. True, if what you believe isn’t a false gospel conditioned on natural man and is scriptural.
I don’t see that in scripture. The Gospel of Grace guarantees God’s people will be saved. A gospel dependent on man means Jesus could have possibly died for no one which is ridiculous.

        1. Anyone that believes a false gospel that man makes the difference between heaven and hell believing that salvation isn’t conditioned solely on the work and person of Christ alone, is lost.

            1. I believe the Gospel of Grace alone

A salvation that is conditioned solely on The shed blood and The imputed righteousness of Christ alone as the only condition of salvation.
God promises to save His people. He is true to His word.

              He said
He that believes into Me has eternal life. God doesn’t take away that life, once given that cause one to believe the Gospel of Grace.
I cannot stop believing the truth because I believe the Gospel and Jesus won’t lose anyone that the father gives.

Any Gospel where salvation is dependent on man is not true.

Neither will He take that belief in the Gospel away from anyone that believes that salvation is by His work alone.

He will sustain whoever believes and preserve whoever believes and glorify whoever believes this Gospel of Grace.

Whoever believes into Him as their rock of their salvation has eternal life. He completes and finishes what He starts.

Knowledge is everything and that knowledge is the knowledge that saves.

              1. Just so I’m not misunderstood I’m not saying knowledge is the condition for salvation; but that having that knowledge received in 2 Corinthians 4:6 is the fruit of salvation or generation from above and the result of the work of God and having that knowledge and believing the Gospel of Grace shows you are saved because you believe the truth that salvation comes conditioned on Christ alone without any effort from man

I believe that. God said it.

Believing into Him means His shed blood and imputed righteousness which means He propitiate justified and redeemed the one that believes the gospel of Grace …. That is how I know

  13. The key is in verse 23 “ if indeed you continue in the faith”…..
Comment: then back to verse 21 You are reconciled if indeed, you continue in the faith which is proven to be in agreement with Mark 16:16 Unbelievers are condemned and never part of the reconciliation of Christ to God. It is ridiculous to think an unbeliever to be reconciled by Christ to God when he is condemned.

      1. The fruit of regeneration is belief of the Gospel of Christ. It is self evident that if anyone backs away from the truth of believing that salvation is conditioned on the shed Blood of Christ and His imputed righteousness alone without any effort from the sinner, then they never truly had heart felt belief of the truth.

You cannot lose your salvation once generated from above by God unto belief of the truth. John 3:3-8 2 Thessalonians 2:13 John 6:39
The Apostle says in those verses that if you continue in the faith, then, Luke 6:45 this is the fruit showing you have been reconciled by Christ’s atonement to God for His people He promised to save Matthew 1:21 who were given to Him by The Father. John 6:37-44 God never shines into the heart of His people a false Gospel of Christ where salvation is conditioned on the sinner. Salvation does not come through hearing a false gospel or a False Christ or atonement

      Colossians 1:20-24

20 and through Him making peace by the blood of His cross, to reconcile all things to Himself; through Him, whether the things on the earth, or the things in the heavens.

21 And you then being alienated and a hostile one in your mind by evil works, but now He reconciled

22 in the body of His flesh, through death, to present you holy and without blemish and irreproachable before Him,

23 if indeed you continue in the faith hav- ing been founded and steadfast, and not be- ing moved away from the hope of the gos- pel which you heard, the one being proclaimed in all the creation under the heaven, of which I, Paul, became a servant.
